Thank you for all of the birthday love yesterday! Y’all know how to make a girl feel loved! I am extremely excited for what 31 holds, the goals we have, and the unexpected surprises along the way!
While yesterday was pretty much full of work, we celebrated Easter and my birthday with an early morning trail run + hike. It was just what I wanted. For those of you who asked on Instagram, my calf sleeves are ProCompression (“SPRING” gets you 40% off) and I love them!
The day has come and gone so now it’s time to get back to what I really love talking about…
Girls being the superior gender… Duh!
Well, at least when it comes to pacing and long distance endurance.
Last week, I was reading through a few trail running magazines and came across the following article:
“Women Better Runners Than Men: Research”
It grabbed my attention immediately and once I read it, I knew I wanted to talk with the researcher and passionate runner behind the article, Jens Jakob Andersen.
Breaking Through Biased Running
Before I share the podcast, I have to share bit about Jens Jakob.
Each time I do a podcast, I check out the person’s Facebook, twitter, website, etc to try and get a feel for them. When I found his Facebook page and saw all the amazing adventures and activities he does/did I knew that we would be able to talk effortlessly.
He truly believes in living his fitness. And being real. This is seen the most evident at Jens Jakob’s website, RunRepeat (awesome site make sure to check it out) where he does his best to provide unbiased reviews on all things running shoes. Where commercials and big companies have no effect on the purchase, and a runner can learn from other runners to find what works and what doesn’t.
The website, opened more doors for him to really combine his true passions…
Jens Jakob was a competitive runner (how he got into it is hilarious and is in the podcast) and a statistician. What does someone who loves to run and loves to crunch numbers do with their life?
Combine the two!
Why Do Men Slow Down More During Races?
So here’s what grabbed me…
Jens Jakob started to think about races and began to see a pattern… while both sexes slowed down from their starting pace to their finishing paces in a race, men were slowing down significantly more.
Why?
Well… that’s what we discuss in the podcast. Along with a ton of other interesting tid-bits of info, questions and thought provoking topics. I think you’re really going to love this.
- How much better are men better than women at running?
- Why is it hard to complete a race with negative splits and how to run stronger?
- Are women better at long, endurance sports <— YES!
- Barefoot (or zero drop shoes) vs. Traditional, lifted heels
- What it means to run with passion and to push away the drive to be uber competitive
- Jen Jakob’s favorite shoes and tips for new & established runners
- So much more!
I know that I say this a lot, but this podcast was one of my favorites. We chatted like old friends, allowed for one question to lead to another, and simply had an awesome time talking.
Enjoy!
So the battle of the sexes continue…
I’ll admit that Dan is better than me at a lot… but I’ve got him beat in the pacing department and flat running. This weekend he announced that he’s the mountain goat between us but I am the cheetah. I’ll take that.
I’m also better at picking up after myself, does that count?
