Yesterday, I burned around 2000 calories (possibly more) all before 1 pm.
The day started at 5am when I rolled out of bed to get my training run done. Even if I didn’t have plans for the day, it still would have started this early because of the summer heat and crazy wet humidity.
Having the opportunity to watch the sunrise over the Charleston Harbor always reminds me how blessed I am. To see this kind of beauty really is an eye opener and helps me to appreciate all the things we have.
Of course once my 8 miles were complete the sun was fully overhead and it was blazing hot. But at least they were done, and my times… not too shabby.
I hightailed it home so that Dan and I could make it to our new fitness adventure spot…
Standup Paddleboarding!
For over a year we have said we wanted to give SUPing a go. Finally when we realized that football season was kicking off (end of summer), we made the decision to rent boards for 4 hours.
We went through Coastal Expeditions here in Charleston, a great company with several locations so that you can put in pretty much in any waterway. I honestly can’t say enough nice things about them. Jennifer, the guide on duty, made sure we felt 100% comfortable before we headed out on our own. She took the time to explain the map, how to navigate the creeks and hooked us up with a dry bag for our snacks and camera.
We opted for the Folly location and in about 20 minutes after arriving we were standing on water.
Waiting for his slow wife to catch up, but isn’t he handsome!?
Dan is a natural when it comes to doing anything with water, I swear sometimes I wonder if he’s Kevin Costner’s character from Water World. I haven’t found the gills yet, but I’m still looking.
He took to standing up immediately and of course was off in a flash.
Me? Not so much. The standup part was easy. Balance was easy. The paddling was tough.
I felt slow, my arms felt weak and no matter how hard I pulled, I kept fighting with the currents (who apparently wanted me to go into the marsh grass).
From time to time I lowered down to my knees because it was the only way I could somewhat catch up with my seaman husband and enjoy the scenery around us…
Sunken pirate ship?
Unfortunately not a sunken pirate ship, but a boat destroyed by Hurricane Hugo in 1989
After a decent pep-talk from Dan, I managed to really give it my all once we turned around. I stayed in the zone by counting my “rows” and before long we had made it back.
But wowza, it was a lot tougher than I thought! My abs were tired, my shoulders exhausted and my body wanted nothing more than to jump into the creek to cool off (which we did).
I loved the experience and recommend SUPing to anyone who likes being out on the water. I can’t wait to try again and get stronger.
It was an eye opener though, I thought it would be a piece of cake for me… umm, nope.
How To Burn 2000 Calories In A Day
Since I was active from 6am until 1pm, I was of course curious to figure out how many calories I had burned.
Paddleboarding… After 3 hours, according to some website, I burned roughly 1000-1300 calories.
Running… I burned around 1000 calories during my 8 mile run.
Total… 2000! We’re talking an entire days worth of eating burned away.
Pretty crazy!
How Did I Refuel?
The worst thing for my to do is to ignore the calorie burn and try to eat as if I never worked out. It might work for some, but in my experience I know that if I ignored it then come today (Sunday) I would be ravenous.
So, I ate more.
Nothing crazy… but it was high energy, clean foods to help with the calorie deficit but also to help recovery.
- A tempeh sandwich for lunch with trailmix
- And apple and almonds for snack
- 2 glasses of champagne (good for relaxing!)
- Pasta with a white wine sauce for dinner (so good)
- 3 Coconut blondie energy balls for dessert
All of this was eaten from 1 – 9pm.
Yes, it is a bit high in carbs but my goal was to replenish my body with whole foods and sometimes that is just what happens.
- Have you been paddleboarding before?
- What do you have left on your summer to-do list?
